Yahoo Covers DS Shortages

Posted on Jan 6, 2007 07:24:03 PM

It seems like everywhere you turn, you cannot avoid a news article that is directed towards Nintendo. TV, Internet and just about everywhere you turn, some avenue of media seems to be covering Nintendo.

Yahoo, the immensely popular search engine, is the newest form of media covering everyone’s favorite video game company. Below is the full article for your reading pleasure. In the article, they discuss the shortages of the Nintendo DS and how popular the handheld has become. Enjoy.

Tried to find a Nintendo DS recently? One minute they’re sitting happily on the shelves of every megalomart in the country, and the next they’re nowhere to be found. In some areas they’re even scarcer than Nintendo’s big holiday seller, the Wii.

In fact, retail tracker site iTrackr, which records availability of 20 or so high-demand products, currently rates the DS between 4 percent and 14 percent availability, depending on the color — comparable to the Wii at 7 percent. The big online retailers sell out within minutes, and some haven’t had stock at all for over a week. Hardly what you’d expect for a device that’s been on the market for over two years, is it?

Contrast that with the just-released PlayStation 3, which — contrary to all our expectations — is starting the New Year with far higher availability than in previous months. Online, consoles are readily available with and sometimes without bundles, and they’re turning up in plentiful supply at the usual chain stores. In other words, it looks like the PS3 drought might be already over.

But in spite of the higher profile consoles, the DS has been outselling absolutely everything else for months. Back in November — the most recent month for which US sales figures are available — almost a million DSs made their way home with eager purchasers, easily making it the biggest selling console that month. It does well back home in Japan, too: it shifted nearly half a million DSs in the week of December 18-24, more than three times the sales of its closest rival, Sony’s PSP.

Will it ever stop? Game ON.

The Wii at my New Year’s Eve Party!

The following story is from Shvitzel. This story was originally found on Gameonrevolution’s Official Forums Page and every week we will be posting a new story to keep you guys up-to-date as to what is going on in other parts of the site. Check it out!

Every year, there is a New Year’s Eve Party in my household with family friends and occasionally some family. While my parents and the adults are chatting it up in the front, my younger brother and I set up the game console in the back and that is where the kids hang out. Prior to this year, the Gamecube had always been centerfold where us kids would play games of SSBM, Mario Kart: DD, and other multiplayer titles. Well, something changed this year…..the GCN was replaced by the Wii.

So, my brother and I set up the Wii all nice and had several games out that we could play since we both received some for Hanukkah. Unfortunately, the number of players was somewhat limited due to us only having three Wiimotes and two nunchucks (I will remind you all of this later), so towards the end of the party, we returned to playing GCN games on the Wii (boy, what a convenience!) so now I will discuss how the party went and what the opinions of the Wii were since my brother and I were two of three people who had played the Wii out of a total of seven kids.

So, we began the Wii festivities with some Excite Truck. This was mostly due to my brother having it on when they arrived as I would have preferred to start with Wii Sports but hey, what are you going to do. The kids arrived and they watched as my brother showed them a race. Soon, they all wanted to try and we set them up on the tutorials. Eventually, we through some of them together in a race, and they all immensely enjoyed it although it was painful to watch them crash every few seconds. But they finished and enjoyed it. Then I battled one of my friends, the one who had played the Wii and not this, and he enjoyed it too, although became slightly frustrated that sometimes the controls were unresponsive. I showed them all how I held it and how it worked best for me.
