Why is it that the winning banner is a low-quality jpeg (check out the text and the way the images are smudged in a sense) 0.0 It also doesn’t fit the requested dimensions for the contest and should therefore be disqualified… but whatever. Congrats!

That banner is terrible, especially after CROPPING it, causing crappier quality than it already was!
The banner didn’t even abide by contest rules. It was supposed to be 790×150, NOT 802×158.
The fact that whoever made it didn’t even bother shaving off the useless white border shows how much effort was put into it.
That pretty much sums up why it doesn’t even fit the layout.
I agree with the first comment completely. I also think that the second to last one in the first column actually suits the site best.

Dude.. quit complaining. It looks good. So what if the size is off by like 8 pixels. That can easily be fixed. And if you checked on the forums, John admitted that it was poor and posted a fixed version.
The webmaster should’ve uploaded the proper one :O!

It doesn’t look good at all. And 8 pixels is a lot when it comes to cropping. It causes damage to the image quality. Think before speaking.
Also, rules are rules. It should have been disqualified for not being the proper size, not given a chance. No exceptions should have been made.
I’m sorry my good friend, but what was wrong with the other banner? It looked great. The colors in this one look off with the Blue, maybe you could experiment with some other background banner colors to go against the sprites. It is not terrible by any means, maybe I’ll just give it some time to sink in. Take it easy man.
If you guys truly believe that we need to change our banner, we may end up changing the banner. I thought that this new one fit the site just great and I am still waiting for the creator to send me the JPEG again with better quality.
The decision wasn’t made by just 1 person it was made by a group of us and this one won fair and square. I understand your concerns and we may end up just having a vote.
As for the banner contest, I think that the prize should still go to the person who made the current banner.

I personally stand by the decision and I love the new banner but I also want to do what’s best for you guys and the site.
I think the vote should be public so site viewers can give their input. After all, it’s really them you’re trying to appeal to. So if you’re going to do another vote, I suggest adding a poll on the front page and make sure each IP can only vote once.
I also recommend saving the image as a .png unless it’s too late. If you go from one file extension to another and the original was bad quality, it won’t help in that case. Then again, you can open the .psd in Photoshop and save that as a .png which would be best (this is for the banner?s creator to do). It was made in PS, right? XD
Anyway, thanks for considering a recount. It shows you care about what your visitors think.
Yeah I think we may end up doing a revote…..straight up presidential style!!! I will talk to KMaxx and see what he thinks. I am sticking to my guns though about the prize. I still think that even though the banner may change, I think that it would be unfair for me to take back his prize that was already promised to him.

Well, while I don’t personally see anything blatantly wrong with the banner in its current form, I’m one who believes that rules should be followed explicitly, and since this banner (I’m told) does not meet the size restrictions……
And since the contest ended, it wouldn’t necessarily be fair to just allow them to redo it and send it along to you again when that could have been done earlier.
I think that the site should vote, one vote per IP. And only vote on banners that met the rules.
I’m not looking to win, I’m looking to be fair.
And for whoever the anonymous dick is, I did bother fixing it, I posted the good version on the forums, the one I meant to send as my entry. I have no idea as to why it looks so bad and I agree that it looks bad as it is on the main page but you don’t need to start insulting me. I did put effort into it, and I take a lot of offense at the blatant remarks that you made. Considering what I have done for this site I would expect a little more courtesy. I am sorry for all of the uproar that I caused winning this contest. I hope it doesn’t damper my friendship with anyone in this community.

The current banner is ok but it does kinda look like a blue version of Gonintendo with sprites instead of art. So the current banner is not the right size? Lets wait until the final version is put up.

After my own, that’s probably my favourite. But if you check out the large/original size you’ll see the quality of the Link image is less than good. It doesn’t go well with the site, but regardless it’s still a nice banner.

How about this, POST WHICH DESIGN YOU GUYS LIKED THE MOST AS OF RIGHT NOW and we will make a decision based on that.
As for the prize, John is still going to get his choice of DS game……HOWEVER- IF THE WINNING DESIGN is different from what there is now, we will send some Nintendo goodies your way…..Does that sound fair?

I am at a loss between Shiv’s, (I really like his idea for switching the image each month) and my own. I’ll think about it some more.
Hmm, I shall have to review everything and decide over it.
I think it’d really help me if I could see all of the banners displayed in the spot currently. I know that it’s hard to make a decision right now because I can’t really see how it blends with the site. But then again, I’m sure that would be really difficult for you guys to do, so let me just head on over to the Flickr page and send you guys a vote sometime in the next day or so.
I really don’t know which reader made what banner am I missing where to go to find that?
Also I think making a voting section on the side panel would be much better than relying on people to post which design they like, the reason why is because I know a lot of readers simply won’t post the ones that they like based on laziness or just not wanting to do it. A voting section would work perfectly and tell you exactly which design we all like the most.
@MetalDave: Personally, I think it better if we don’t know who made which banner. Then we can vote simply on which we like most.
