How Much Innovation Can We Take!?!?!

Posted on Jun 13, 2007 07:20:16 PM

Huge props to our man SHVITZEL for the following quality article. Enjoy.

If there is one thing that never ceases to amaze me about Nintendo, it is how they attempt to create new innovative hardware. Starting way back with the Super Scope, Nintendo has been trying to innovate gaming with creative ideas that are often unimaginable. I mean, I don?t think anyone really thought that they?d be playing games in their own living room by pointing a controller at their television and pulling a trigger to shoot. And in actuality, that experience was short lived.

We?ve seen Nintendo do this repeatedly. They?ve utilized tilt control in Gameboys, microphones for varying consoles, and more. But one thing has held true: if the innovative device in question was not a main feature of its respective console, it usually didn?t end well. I guess what this means is if the innovative device in question was not available from the start for the system it was on, the device was usually utilized very poorly or didn?t receive a lot of support. I mean, how many games did we see that used the Super Scope? The tilt control? Microphone games on the GCN?

However, Nintendo has embraced innovation with three of their consoles from the beginning of those console?s lifespans, two of which have succeeded amazingly well: the Virtual Boy, the Nintendo DS, and the Wii. I bet you know which one of those failed.

So, now we?ve got the two powerhouses: the Wii and the DS. Both are doing pretty darn well. Wii utilizes pointing and motion controls and the DS has the touch screen and the built-in microphone. But this past week, we caught word of another thing that will begin to appear on the DS: slide control!

Quick Update: This just in, Nintendo has sold over 8 million Wii systems worldwide in less than seven months! For all of those keeping score, this out paces PS3 and 360 for the respective periods.

My question is this; If the Wii was more readily available, how many units do you think they would already have sold through?
