So the wave of success the the Wii has received thus far is nothing short of extraordinary. Ladies and gentlemen Nintendo is and it’s back in a big way. Since day 1, the Nintendo Wii has been a virtual sell out and looks to show no signs of slowing well into 2008. While the phenomenal success of the Nintendo Wii cannot be ignored, I find myself asking the question, Is the Nintendo Wii in trouble?
Take a look at the following screenshot and tell me if you’re not impressed:
The screen is taken from the recently announced Street Fighter IV and from the looks of it, it won’t be making a Wii debut simply because it’s breathtaking. If old times prove to be true, graphics never usually win the race, but a game of this magnitude simply cannot be ignored.
I hope that I am jumping to conclusions here but I can honestly say that I do not see this title showing up on our shiny white Wii anytime soon. Again- I pray that I will stand corrected but simply put, the Wii probably cannot produce a game that looks this good.
Marketing has also been a key issue in the land of Game On (watch any Game On TV episode and you will hear small qualms from myself), and Sony recently has caught the eyes of gamers worldwide with their recent price drop and their ramp up in marketing. The Nintendo Wii on the other hand is still using their catchy, but 1 year old, “Wii would like to play” commercials. This is just my personal opinion but the new Sony commercials trump the year old Wii commercials and really make gamers believe that Sony is the way to go.
Online- Nintendo please announce something that is going to improve your online network. I would be happy with either VOIP (Voice over IP), or the removal of game specific friend codes. In the eyes of most gamers, it will show us that you are at least serious about taking the fight online and not ignoring this integral part of how we play games.
2008 will be a very interesting year for the industry itself and I really hope that my favorite system continues its worldwide dominance. Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Pikmin 3 (please Nintendo), among others will help keep Nintendo in the race, but will they have enough staying power to rival what Sony or Microsoft have up their sleeves? Only time will tell…
By no means was this a Nintendo bash, rather I am hoping the above story spurs some clatter in our comments section or in our forums as to your opinions on the issue. I look forward to hearing what you guys have to say… Keep it here. Game On.
