Hand controllers are for the birds….Or so Nintendo believes. Check out the report below:

Leading microchip manufacturer Intel believes Nintendo’s successor to the best-selling Wii console won’t come with hand controllers.

“We imagine some future generation of [Nintendo’s] Wii won’t have hand controllers,” said Justin Rattner, the company’s chief technology officer.

“You just set up the cameras around the room and wave your hand like you’re playing tennis.”

Intel has been speaking to Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo regarding what chips might power the next round of consoles. According to Business Week, the firm is keen not to miss the opportunity to get involved in the next generations of games systems after it was beaten to it by IBM for the current models.

Intel claims its newly developed microchips are capable of 1 trillion calculations per second. This is far in advance of the current IBM Cell processor, which is only capable of running at around 256 million calculations per second.

My Thoughts:
In all honesty I have no idea what to think. It is obvious that Nintendo really hit it out of the ball park with their 5th console Wii attracting legions of new gamers while retaining basically all of the Nintendo fan base that they have built over their illustrious career. On the other hand, how the heck would I control all of my favorite franchises without the use of a “hand controller”.

This story is utterly amazing on how far someone will go for a game.

The world is a very strange place. An angry Canadian father comes home and finds his 15-year-old brat smoking dope with two delinquent friends. In fit of rage he puts his kid’s Christmas present - Guitar Hero III - up for sale on eBay. And what do you know, he sells the US$90 game to an Australian for US$9100.

The buyer, aspire1700computer, who obviously has much more money than sense, must be in the running to be Australia’s richest gamer.

Once the pastime of teenagers huddled over bedroom PCs, gaming is now a huge family affair. Here is InGear’s pick of 2007

This was the year computer games burst out of the geek’s bedroom and into the living room – thanks largely to the near universal appeal of the Wii console. However, there were signs of this trend last year with the popularity of Nintendo’s DS handheld games machine, which has gone on to account for one-fifth of all games sold in the UK during 2007 so far, according to Chart-Track/ELSPA, the retail researchers.

Most consoles have had family-friendly titles released for them but it has been the Wii – with its clever motion-sensitive controller, which lets users play virtual sports in their living room – that has converted all ages and both genders to the pleasures of gaming. To get an idea of Nintendo’s dominance, the latest figures show that of the big three consoles (the Wii, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3), the Wii accounted for half of all units sold in 2007. The total value of UK sales of the three big consoles so far in 2007 is £722m. Meanwhile the Wii has sold out in many shops as buyers rush to secure one for Christmas.

I just thought it would be nice to see what the other side of the pond was saying concering the Wii. Looks like the UK is just as hard to find over there as it is over here.
