House of the Dead: Overkill Review
“Oh yes, there will be blood”
Fans of gruesomely, bloody, violent video games rejoice; House of the Dead Overkill has arrived on Nintendo Wii and it is brutal. Sega has truly delivered an experience like no other and I advise all of you reading this post, this game is not for the weak at heart. How did the game fair, read on gamers and find out!
For all of those keeping score, House of the Dead Overkill is a rail shooter, with pre-determined character movements, while the shooting element is under player control by pointing the Wii Remote at the screen (works rather well I may add).
The player can point the Wiimote near the edge of the screen to move the camera angle slightly in that direction, allowing a further field of view known as “Danger Cam”. The story mode can be played solo, with one weapon or dual-wielding controls or with another human player.
What makes this game shine is the violence (did you expect anything else)… Normally I am not a huge fan overly violent games (I now have 3 little “Game On’s”) but this title has a very weird satisfying feeling to it (you are shooting hordes of undead so I guess its acceptable right?).
Overkill features vocabulary straight out of a truck stop and should never be echoed by anyone (anyone who doesn’t want a potty mouth that is). Clearly if you’re not a fan of swearing, this game is not for you. There is good reason why the game has received the “M” rating; I lost count how many times the F-Bomb was dropped.
I do have to say that I absolutely loved the whole “grind-house” feel for this game and really applaud Sega for trusting in Wii owners to purchase this quality title. The game really feels like a cheesy B-Movie horror flick and works out really decent for the most part. The graphics on Overkill are pretty solid and does a decent job of pushing the Wii hardware to the limit (frame rate rarely dips).
The only quam I have for this game is the occasional Zombie getting stuck on the wall but overall it doesn’t detract from your experience.
Simply put, if you’re looking for a more mature title to add to your Wii library, House of the Dead Overkill will suffice. It’s violent, it’s a little cheesy and it looks and plays very well. Overkill will be a great addition to your Wii library (if you’re old enough) and should be enjoyed by many.
~Game On Score: 8.5 Out of 10~
