Has Nintendo gone to far?

Posted on Jul 24, 2008 07:35:02 AM

Find yourself huffing and wheezing while playing Wii Sports? Well soon enough, you may have to step off that blood pressureWii balance board for a bit and check your blood pressure with your Wii-Mote.

That’s right, Nintendo filed a patent for a Wii-Mote blood pressure check add-on. According to Spong’s report, the add-on will allow the following functions and features:

“Pulse and body temperature of a user playing a video game on the video game console, and a rotation counter for counting the number of rotations of the main body; a control unit mounted in the recess; a band including two second measurement devices for measuring blood pressure and pulse respectively by wrapping the band around the wrist; and a cable interconnecting the main body and the band. Blood pressure, pulse, and body temperature values are shown the display while playing.”

Availability and release information of the add-on is not disclosed as of yet, but at least now, the next Gramma visits, let her know that she can soon play Wii Tennis with you without any worry. With the Wii balance board, Wii-mote and blood pressure check add-on, we now await for Wii Fit Bootcamp with Billy Blanks.

GCN controller for the Japanese

Japanese GCN controller

In what is an almost-but-not-completely-awesome move, Nintendo has announced that they will start making GameCube controllers again in Japan. Makes sense, Smash Bros and Mario Kart have both created huge demand for the old GCN controllers.

The only downside – these aren’t WaveBirds. No wireless for you! To make up for it, the cord has been extended to three meters (about a meter longer than the old GCN controller cords). Perhaps they lost the WaveBird mold after all?

Who knows, but this is still pretty cool news. These white GCN controllers will be released this month in Japan for 2000 yen (about twenty smackers). Hopefully, Nintendo will put a few of these out on our shores, too.

Nintendo=Great Sales

It seems as though for the time being, the premier choice for gamers around the world is Nintendo. Nintendo DS and Wii have captured a broad audience and they don’t look like they will show signs of slowing any time soon. Here is what 1up has to report.

Nintendo shareholders must be pleased, as the companies premiere products, Wii and Nintendo DS, continue to experience ridiculous sales numbers.
In a financial report released today, the company detailed the successes of both platforms so far, announcing Wii has sold 5.84 million units worldwide since launch and Nintendo DS continues trailblazing with a whopping 40 million hardware units — 23 million this year alone — in gamer’s hands.

Software sales are equally as impressive: New Super Mario Bros. with 9.5 million, and the brain training series at 12 million in total, 8.08 sold this year.

With the inevitable release of title like Mario, Pokemon (already out in Japan), Metroid and Super Smash Bros., this looks to be another stellar year. Game ON!
