Security researchers have hacked into a Nintendo Wii game console to run their own code in a move that makes it far easier to develop homebrew games for the popular gaming device.
Awesome article and video concerning hacking the Wii for homebrew applicationds.
Looks like the Nintendo Wii wasn’t just a fad, after all.
Of course, that’s just our opinion. Nintendo’s rivals, Sony and Microsoft, may try to argue that the popularity of the Wii really is still just a fleeting craze - one that has spanned more than a year and has bridged two holiday selling seasons.
Whatever you want to call it, here’s the truth: In an industry in which the “next big thing” seems to come around every few weeks, the Wii continues to be the biggest story in the video game world, despite being released more than 13 months ago. Nintendo simply can’t produce enough of them, and, in a repeat of last year, Wii-hungry shoppers are again lining up outside stores in the middle of the night or overpaying on eBay and Craigslist just to get their hands on one.
This story is utterly amazing on how far someone will go for a game.
The world is a very strange place. An angry Canadian father comes home and finds his 15-year-old brat smoking dope with two delinquent friends. In fit of rage he puts his kid’s Christmas present - Guitar Hero III - up for sale on eBay. And what do you know, he sells the US$90 game to an Australian for US$9100.
The buyer, aspire1700computer, who obviously has much more money than sense, must be in the running to be Australia’s richest gamer.
Check out the full story. This is just amazing on how much someone will pay for a game.
This is an amazing story of how hard it is to still get a Wii.
At 11:04:59 Friday morning, a Nintendo Wii video game system sold for $388, plus $15 shipping, in an eBay auction. Fourteen seconds later, another sold for $390, plus $34 shipping.
Holiday shoppers are turning to online auctions because every new shipment of the normally $250 Wii - the season’s most sought after product for two years running - continues to fall short of demand throughout the United States.
Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime implored consumers Friday to be patient, saying “if you could possibly hold out a little bit longer, there will be more product available.”
But not enough to satisfy all you Wii-desperate consumers before Christmas, although some of you may be able to snag one this weekend when retailers are expected to heavily promote any systems they have in stock.
IF you want my opinion on this, people are willing to pay $349 on eBay for a Wii but not $399 at a store for PS3…what does this tell the gaming community??
The good guys over at GoNintendo had this to report regarding the newly soon to be announced Wii channel:
None other than Reggie Fils-Aime disclosed the first information on WiiWare, the original downloadable content we?ve all been talking about. While we won?t be seeing this new channel take off until next year, we finally have some concrete details.
While the channel name is yet to be announced, WiiWare is what the games are curently being called. Nintendo has stated that they are looking for content from all walks, from big name developers to the indie crowd. All pricing will be determined on a game by game basis.
Look for something more official later today. I couldn’t be more excited!
Quick Update: I don’t know how strongly you gamers feel about the whole situation regarding Manhunt 2 being rated AO, but if you want to sign an online petition ordering Nintendo to reevaluate their decision, head here!

I spell “colors” with no “U,” in case you all were wondering. In any case, it seems that we may be receiving an array of wiimote colors in the near future. It seems like pink, white and blue will be the weapons of choice; which one are you getting?

Quick Update: This just in, Nintendo has sold over 8 million Wii systems worldwide in less than seven months! For all of those keeping score, this out paces PS3 and 360 for the respective periods.
My question is this; If the Wii was more readily available, how many units do you think they would already have sold through?
Nintendo may have just become a major player in the RPG realm. Bandai Namco Holdings issued a press release today announcing that it will transfer 80% of its 96% stake in Monolith Soft to Nintendo, effective May 1!!
A huge move for Nintendo and a breath of relief for RPG fans everywhere. Monolith is known for its work on the Xenosaga series as well as Baten Kaitos for the Nintendo Gamecube.
Awesome news and we will keep you posted for any new findings.
